The sales number of Smart TV in China was 5,300,600 units in Q1. Smart TV maker may have to fight with the foreign enemies after this.

Smart TV is gradually becoming hot in China from last year, because its price is gradually becoming affordable.

According to the report by Eguan, the sales number of Smart TV in China was  5,300,600 units in Q1. The sales number of whole flat-panel TV was about 12,780,000, so it means the sales percentage of Smart TV was 41.5% in Q1.

And the next graph is the market share of Smart TV by each maker in Q1.

Skyworth  16.9%
TCL   16.2%
Hisense   15.8%
KONKA   15.5%
ChangHong   13.3%
Samsung   6.1%
SHARP   5.6%
Haier   4.2%

Other   6.4%

There is not the specific maker that has enormous power in Chinese Smart TV industry, and 5 companies stand on the top group now. As the second group, there are the foreign companies such as Samsung and SHARP.

But anyway, it can be said that the Smart TV market in China is still the status of rival warlords.

By the way, this report said that the Smart TV market has continued growing, but what's going to happen to this market now? I think that there are two threats for their growth.

1. Chromecast
2. STB

As you know, Google recently released the Chromecast, and its price is 35 USD.  At this time, I don't know whether Google will provide it to Chinese market or not, but I think there is some impact even if they will not provide it to China.

And recently, Xiaomi provides their own STB, and Alibaba also have a plan to provide their STB in the near future. Both prices are also about 50 to 65 USD.

These two threats can implement with cheap flat-panel TV, if its TV has the HDMI terminal. It means that this combination can materialize the same function with Smart TV, and furthermore this combination is basically cheaper than Smart TV.

So I think that Smart TV makers have to prepare for the fight with the "foreign enemies".

The sales numbers of smartphone in China were 75.28 million units in the first quarter, and 83.5% of sales numbers were smartphone.

According to the report by Eguan, the sales numbers of smartphone in China were 75.28 million units in the first quarter. And it is 83.5% of whole mobile phone sales number, and it increased 141.5% compared to the last year.

According to the report by Gartner, the sales numbers of smartphone in the worldwide were 210.04 million units in the first quarter, so it can be said that one-third of smartphone were sold in China...

And according the report by MIIT, the annual sales numbers of smartphone were 258 million units, but it seems that its number will easily exceed 300 million units in this year.

And the following picture is the market share of each vendor in the first quarter.

Samsung    17.3%
Lenovo        13.1%
Coolpad      10.3%
Huawei        10.1%
ZTE                6.9%
Apple             6.4%
K-touch        4.3%
Gionee          3.8%
HTC               3.1%
OPPO            2.9%

Samsung got 17.0% market share, and they kept the top position in Chinese smartphone market, but Motorola and Nokia couldn't ranked in at this time.

HTC also downed their ranking compared to a few years ago, and it can be said that "replacing the old with the new" was  evidently occurred in Chinese smartphone market.

Xiaomi also has the chance of ranking in the top 10 vendors, and a lot of the other vendors also have the chance of it in future.

I'm also looking forward to watch the trend of this market from now on.

Baidu report said that about each 70% users use Win XP and IE in China.

According to the recent report by Baidu statistics, IE8 is the most used web browser in China as of the end of April.

IE8.0            38.05%
IE6.0            17.62%
Chrome        17.07%
IE9.0            10.41%
Sogou             6.27%
IE7.0              1.73%
Qihoo 360    1.41%
Maxthon       1.25%
Firefox          1.20%

The period covered by this report is three months that is from February 2013 to April.

As mentioned above, IE8 has 38.05% market share, and it is the most used web browser in China. But the worthy of special mentions are following two things.

- IE6 is still used by 17.62% users in China.
The data by "IE6 countdown" also said that 24.0% user still use IE6 in China. About the other country, the average utilization of IE6 is less than 2%, so it can be said that China is the special circumstances of web browser.

- Chrome is rapidly growing in this three months.
Chrome had 9.06% market share in the last three months. Hence it follows that Chrome got the almost double market share compared to the previous three months.

The next picture is the market share of the PC OS in China as of the end of April.

Windows XP        70.73%

Windows 7             25.1%

Windows Vista      0.59%

Mac OS                 0.42%

Windows 2003        0.3%

Other                     2.85%

The period covered by this report is also from February 2013 to April.

Over 70% users use Windows XP in China, and other 25% users use Windows 7. Hence it follows that they totally have over 95% market share in China.

The formal support from Microsoft of Windows XP will end in next April, but Qihoo 360 announced to continue support of Windows XP instead of MS after next April.

It is the something worth seeing whether Chinese XP users will upgrade or replace their OS to other OS or not.

Anyway at this time, I think that web service provider or app developer who wants to enter Chinese market have to consider the above results.

[Graph] The summary of the 3G market in China. 3G user in China was 280 million people in the first quarter.

All of 3 big career in China published their achievement of the first quarter, so I would like to introduce the current status of 3G users in China.

According to their report, the total number of mobile users in China was 1.145 billion people in the first quarter, and the number of 3G users in China was 0.28 billion people in the first quarter.

The following picture is the market share of total user number.

China Mobile has totally 726.31 users, so they dominate 63.34% of the Chinese mobile market. But compared to the last July, their market share decreased 1.87%.

That's one of the reason is related to the increase of the 3G user ratio. The 3G user ratio in the last July was 16.8%, but its ratio was up to 24.5% in the first quarter. The market share of 3G user is more competitive than the market share of total user number as follows.

In China, China Mobile already started LTE test on some places. Will it be happen something change in the era of LTE? We have to keep watching the trend as ever.

Baidu still have the two big problem to be solved for search area.

As you know, Baidu is the biggest search solution provider in China. And actually, they have dominated the search market in China for a long time.

But recently, they are just facing the two big problems to be solved as follows.

1. Moblie Search Market

Chinese mobile search market share in the first quarter

Baidu  37.5%
SOSO   16.7%
easou   15.7%
Yicha   11.2%
Sogou    7.4%
Google China   6.3%
Youdao  2.3%
Roboo     1.8%
iask        1.3%

The above picture is the market share of the Chinese mobile search engine in the first quarter. According to this report, Baidu has 37.5% market share in Chinese mobile search engine market, and they occupy the leading position on there.
But as I explained before, they still don't have the overwhelming strength in the mobile area compared to the PC area.

Baidu has provided the special Smartphone that is adopted their own OS with partner since last year, and they established the LBS specific team in their company to accelerate their mobile solution. But compared the market share of last year, but it seems that their effort is not still rewarded.

2. Rise of the Qihoo 360
The following picture is the market share of the Chinese PC search market in the first quarter.

Baidu                68.32%
Qihoo 360       14.40%
Sogou                  8.35%
SOSO                   4.05%
Google China     3.75%
Bing China          0.64%
Yahoo China       0.32%
Youdao                0.28%
Other                   0.07%

As mentioned before, Baidu have the the overwhelming strength in the PC search market. But compared to the first quarter of 2012, their market share decreased 10.18%. The main reason is the existence of Qihoo 360.

Qihoo 360 started to provide their own search service from last August. They are gradually expanding their market share, and they got the 2nd position in this market in the first quarter.

But Qihoo 360 also have the problem to be solved for mobile search solution. They started to provide their own mobile search service from last November, but they couldn't still get the enough market share at the first quarter.

This report also said that Chinese mobile internet users already exceeded 300 million people in the first quarter.

I think that the fierce battle in the Chinese mobile search market still continues for the time being, and it seems that all of the fighters have a chance to win. We have to keep watching who will come through this fierce battle.

And other remarkable point is the Sogou. In the second quarter, they were out of this ranking. But they had 9.8% of market share in the fourth quarter, and they positioned the fourth place. It can be said great leap forward.

But on the other hand, Google decreased sharply their market share. They had 17.5% of market share in the second quarter, but they decreased their market share to 9.6% in the fourth quarter.

Now mobile internet user in China exceeded 420 million people, and its growth is still ongoing. The mobile map user also will be increasing more and more, so I really be interested in the trend of this market in future too.

Chinese search engine market is estimated to grow over 15 billion USD market size in 2015. Will Baidu be able to continue dominating this market?

Recently, Eguan published the report that is written about the result and forecast of Chinese search engine market from 2010 to 2015.

They estimated that its market scale will reach 15.1 billion USD(= 950.0 RMB) in 2015, its CAGR in the next 5 years will be about 50%.

Now Chinese search engine market is dominated by Baidu.

According to the recent data of CNZZ, Baidu have 65.33% market share of it. As I reported before, they have 250,000 advertising customer, and they expected that it become more than 300,000 customer in the end of 2012. Their ads revenue was also estimated to reach 20 billion RMB(= 3.18 billion USD), it will be expected that their revenue will be also continued increasing in 2013.

As I wrote the above, Baidu have the big strength in the Chinese search engine market, but they also have some weak point and anxiety.

1. Mobile search engine market
As I reported before, Baidu have the big strength in its market. But it is the case of PC search engine, and they don't have the strength in the mobile engine market compared to it.
Of course, they already recognized this situation, and they already provided some solutions(such as mobile OS, mobile cloud, LBS division and so forth) for solving this challenge .

According to the report by CNNIC, mobile devices already became the top of all method connecting to the internet. And its trend will also continue this year,  so it can be said that the acceleration of mobile solution is the most important challenge for them in 2013.

Furthermore according to the rumor, Baidu may invest to Sina Weibo for enforcing their mobile solutions. Before, some resources said that Alibaba have a plan to invest to Sina Weibo, but it seems that it went back to square one.

2. Rivals
The biggest security company "Qihoo 360" joined the war of this market last year. They start to provide their search engine for PC "so.com" from 2012 October , and also started to provide their search engine for mobile devices "m.so.com" from 2012 November. And they are rapidly increasing their market share in only few months. According to the above report, they already got the second position in its market.

According to the news, they have a plan to cooperate with Google China in near future, so Baidu also must be watching carefully for their trend.

It looks like that China's mobile market still continue to be expanded with a focus on Android and iOS, but it also looks like that there are various changes.

China Mobile still dominate 65% of Chinese mobile whole market, but 3G market is in the situation of competitive.

Big 3 career(China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom) released the report of each mobile user condition in China as of  June 2012.

According to these report, recent market share of Chinese mobile user is as follows:

User number of each mobile career as of June

China Mobile   : 683 million

China Unicom  : 219 million

China Telecom : 144 million

Actually China Mobile still dominate 65% of Chinese mobile market.

But on the other hand, we can find the different result on the data that is focusing 3G users.

The number of 3G users each mobile career as of June

China Mobile  : 67.079 million

China Unicom : 57.53 million

China Telecom : 50.96 million

China Mobile have 38.21% share of 3G market in China, but its number is much less than whole market share. And China Unicom have 32.77% of market share, China Telecom have 29.03% of market share, so it can be said that focusing 3G market in China is in the situation of competitive.

The one of reason is related to each method of 3G communication. As you know, each 3 careers adopted the method of 3G communication is as follows:

- China Mobile    TD-SCDMA
- China Unicom   W-CDMA
- China Telecom  CDMA2000

W-CDMA and CDMA2000 are the communication method that is adopted by many companies in the world wide, but TD-SCDMA is the standard that is used only in China.

So in case that foreign mobile device companies would like to enter Chinese market with China Unicom or China Telecom, there are no need to customize their mobile devices basically. But in case that they would like to enter Chinese market with China Mobile, they have to add or change to TD-SCDMA chip on their mobile devices.

It is also the fact that China Mobile have less kind of 3G mobile devices compared to China Unicom and China Telecom.

This year or next year will start LTE service in China, but China Mobile have a plan to advance the standard of TD-LTE. China Unicom and China Telecom have not decided that they adopt which standard at this time. So we have to keep attention this trend the same as always.
