The MAU of mobile QQ increased to 490 million, and QQ still have more energy than WeChat.

On 14th May, Tencent published their performance reporting of the first quarter.

And according to the reporting, the monthly active users(= MAU) of WeChat increased 87% compared with the same period last year, and it was 396 million people. The MAU of WeChat on the previous period was 355 million people, so it means the MAU of WeChat increased 40 million people compared with the previous period.

As you see, WeChat keeps their power in the Chinese social media market, and Tencent said that they will continue to enhance the payment solution of WeChat as before.

But as same as the previous period, QQ still has more energy than WeChat in this market. According to this reporting, the 'mobile' MAU of QQ increased 52% compared with the same period last year, and its number was 490 million people. In the previous period, the difference of MAU between WeChat and mobile QQ was about 70 million, but this difference increased to about 100 million people in this period.

The total MAU of QQ was 848 million people in this quarter, and so it can be said that QQ is still king of Chinese social media market.

And the total MAU of Qzone was 644 million people, and the number of its mobile MAU was 467 million people.

We or some related news site have paid attention to WeChat in particular, but I think that we also have to pay attention to QQ or Qzone, particularly their mobile area.

The number of peak simultaneous online users on QQ exceeded 200 million people.

According to the official account on Tencent Weibo, the number of peak simultaneous online users on QQ exceeded 200 million people in the night before last.

Official said that time was 21:11 on April 11th.

According to the latest reporting by Tencent, the largest number of peak simultaneous online users on QQ was about 180 million people in the fourth quarter of 2013. And it is said that the first time of the number exceeding 100 million was on March 5, 2010.

Recently on the web news or some social media, the topic is concentrated to WeChat. But QQ had 800 million monthly active users, and they also had 426 million smartphone monthly active users in the fourth quarter of 2014. The monthly active users of WeChat was 355 million people, so its number is still less than QQ in actuality.

The battle of the instant messenger market in China is heating up day by day, but it seems that the reign of Tencent in this market will still continue for a while.

I wonder if the company that can defeat Tencent will appear in this market in near future. Let's keep watching as ever.

The monthly active users of WeChat was 355 million people as of the end of 2013, but QQ is still more welcomed than WeChat.

Yesterday, Tencent published the their performance reporting of 2013. And according to the reporting, the monthly active users (MAU) of WeChat was 355 million people as of the end of 2013 in total.

This report said the MAU increased 6% compared with the previous quarter, and it increased 121% compared with the same period last year. But they published only the total MAU number of WeChat, and they didn't published the breakdown of its number, for example the rate of China users and oversea.

And the other numbers that are related to social media are as follows:

- Monthly active users of IM (* It means 'QQ') were 808 million people.
(It decreased 1% compared to the previous period, and increased 1% compared to the year-earlier period.)

- The number of the peak simultaneous online IM was 180 million people.
(It increased 1% compared to the previous period, and increased 2% compared to the year-earlier period.)

- Monthly active users of Qzone were 625 million people.
(It increased 0.3% compared to the previous period, and increased 4% compared to the year-earlier period.)

This reporting said that the monthly active 'smartphone' users of QQ was 426 million as of the end of 2013. This number is larger than WeChat, so it may be said that QQ is still welcomed more than WeChat in China.

Few days ago, China's central bank demanded that payments made by scanning a bar code with mobile devices be halted, hitting the payment arms of Internet companies Tencent Holdings Ltd and Alibaba Group Holding.

We have to keep watching there will be what kind of influence for WeChat, QQ and their business.

The battle in the lunar new year greetings of the big three social media services in China. (QQ/ WeChat/ Sina Weibo)

This year, from Jan 31 to Feb 6th is the lunar new year holiday in China. And by the old calender, Jan 31 was the new year's day, and Jan 30 was the new year's eve of this year. Recently the person who send and receive the greetings of new year on the social media is rapidly increasing in China as I explained before.

Chinese big three social media service, QQ, WeChat, Sina Weibo published the announcement that is related with the new year's greetings as follows.

1. QQ (Tencent)

According to the official announcement, there were 13.6 billion messages in Jan 30th on QQ platform. And in a peak time, there were 32.7 million messages in 1 minute, and they also said that there were 16 million video messages in 1 day.

2. WeChat (Tencent)

According to the official announcement, in a peak time, there were about 10 million messages on WeChat. They didn't publish the total message number of Jan 30th, but they said that its total sending message number were double of the last year, and its total receiving message number were three times of the last year.

And they also said the peak time of exchanging messages were 22:00 and 24:00 on Jan 30th.

3. Sina Weibo (Sina)

According to the official announcement, there were 863,408 messages on the first one minute of Jan 31. They also didn't publish the total messages number, but there were 729,751 message at the same period of the last year, so it can be said its number was increasing.

Well, by looking only this result, QQ is the king. And the next is WeChat, and Sina Weibo was far away from them. But this result was based of new year greetings.

In general, the new year greetings are exchanged between the family, friends and the acquaintance. I think that the social media services can categorize two types by the point of their characteristic view.

Those are "social media service that directed inward" and "social media service that directed outward". Users mainly exchange the personal information between the close relationship in the "social media service that directed inward", and its typical example is Facebook.

On the other hand, user would like to spread their information to unknown people such as the purpose of personal branding in the "social media service that directed outward", and its typical example is Twitter.

And I think that QQ and WeChat is the "social media service that directed inward", and Sina Weibo is the "social media service that directed outward". So I think that Sina Weibo does not have to be pessimistic about this result. If the standard is different, its result also will be different.

But Sina Weibo is recently said that their total users or active users are decreasing.  I think, in the peak period of their growth( it is in 2011) , the users who like the "social media service that directed inward" also joined Sina Weibo, because their friend or acquaintance also use Sina Weibo. And recently, mainly such user was gone or stop to use Sina Weibo, I think.

So I think that Sina Weibo have to care the users who like the "social media service that directed outward", and at the same time, they have to decide how treat the users who like the "social media service that directed inward".

Last, I would like to introduce the status of SMS messages.

SMS has been the most popular method of exchanging the new year greeting in China for a long time. But as I explained before, its number is recently decreasing year by year.

Its number is estimated 30 billion messages during this Chinese new year's holiday, but its number will be decreasing 1.17 billion messages compared with the last year. Mainly almost young people, 80's or 90's, like to use QQ or WeChat when they will sent such greetings, so I think this trend also continue in future.

Many users sometimes have the different two intention in their mind, such as "social media service that directed inward" and "social media service that directed outward". When many users get tires of the "social media service that directed inward", then they tend to move to the "social media service that directed outward". And the reverse pattern is also true.

Now WeChat is the most powerful social media service in China, and it can be said that WeChat is the "social media service that directed inward". So I think the "social media service that directed outward" may come to the fore as a next trend of WeChat.

The number of WeChat monthly active users is 271.9 million people, and it increased 124.3% compared to the year-earlier period.

Because Tencent also published their performance reporting in the third quarter, so I would like to introduce some number that is related to social media.

At first, this report said that the monthly active users (MAU) of WeChat was 271.9 million people as of the third quarter.

It increased 124.3% compared to the year-earlier period, and increased 15.3% compared to the previous period.

Tencent haven't published the total number of WeChat registered users since the beginning of this year, so I don't know the actual ratio of active users. According to some source, the total number of WeChat registered users are about 500 million people, so it can be said that the ratio of monthly active users is about 54.3%.

And the other numbers that are related to social media are as follows:

- Monthly active users of IM (* It means 'QQ') were 815.6 million people.
(It decreased 0.4% compared to the previous period, and increased 4.0% compared to the year-earlier period.)

- The number of the peak simultaneous online IM was 178.2 million people.
(It increased 2.9% compared to the previous period, and increased 6.5% compared to the year-earlier period.)

- Monthly active users of Qzone were 623.3 million people.
(It decreased 0.5% compared to the previous period, and increased 5.1% compared to the year-earlier period.)

Tencent said that they will continuously strive to increase the MAU of WeChat, and they will also strive to get more WeChat users in overseas.

They published the latest version of Android client, but this adding function may be the small evidence of their effort to get more oversea users :)

Tencent dominates more than 65% of mobile instant messenger market in China. The king of IM tool "QQ" is still keeping the top position.

As I explained many times, "Instant Messenger (Chat)" is the most popular internet service in China. According to the recent report by CNNIC, the utilization of chat tool is 84.2% in China, and the hottest chat tool "WeChat" is expected to have more than 500 million users soon.

And it is the most popular for mobile users, and CNNIC said that the utilization of mobile instant messenger is 85.7% as of the end of June.
In a situation like that, Eguan published the market share of mobile instant messenger service in China as follows.

QQ (Tencent)                    38.07%
WeChat (Tencent)           27.97%
Feixin (China Mobile)     18.37%
Yiliao (China Telecom)     4.98%
MSN (Microsoft China)    3.80%
Wangwang (Taobao)         2.38%
Miliao (Xiaomi)                   1.43%

Other     3.00%

The above picture is the market share of the total registered number of mobile instant messenger users.

Recently, WeChat has been the hottest topic in the news related to internet services in China, but the king of IM tool "QQ" is still keeping the top position in this market. As I said above, WeChat is expected to have more than 500 million users soon, but it is said that QQ already has more than 700 million users totally, and a most of QQ users are using mobile devices.

The next picture is the market share of its active users.

QQ (Tencent)                     42.54%
WeChat (Tencent)            23.38%
Feixin (China Mobile)      17.65%
Yiliao (China Telecom)      6.76%
Wangwang (Taobao)         3.07%
MSN (Microsoft China)     2.53%
Miliao (Xiaomi)                   1.08%

Other     2.99%

There are not so much differences with the market share of total users in the ranking, but there is an interesting result.

The difference in the market share between QQ and WeChat is more than the difference of total users. What was this?

Actually, WeChat is rapidly increasing their "registered" users, but I also feel that a lot of people are still usually using QQ more than WeChat. Especially, in the business scene, in the provincial city, the user of the earlier 80's or 70's and so forth.

So I think that these factors are may be reflected as a result.

Anyway, it's a surprising thing that Tencent (QQ + WeChat) is dominating more than 65% of this market.

Well, mobile internet is the hottest topic and the hottest industry in China now, and furthermore mobile instant messenger is one of the hottest among them. We have to continue watching the trend of this as before.

VP of WeChat said "Official Account Admin Platform" is not a marketing platform. What is its intention?

As you know, many companies and organization have used WeChat as a marketing tool to develop or extend Chinese market. And they have already registered the official account on "WeChat Official Account Admin Platform (WOAAP) ".

According to Tencent,  there are hundreds of thousands of official accounts in WOAAP. And there are 30,000 accounts who already got the "V" mark, and 70% of them are the corporate user.

In this situation, in an event, VP of Wechat "Ceng Ming" said that WOAAP is not a marketing platform. What is this intention?

He mainly pointed out the two things.

1. Too much sales information will exhaust the WeChat user.
There is the limitation that the official accounts on WOAAP can post one information in a day, and "V" marked accounts can post two information in a day too. This limitation exists for not let WeChat users be tired of  a large amount of sales information.

As I explained before, they started cleaning up the fallacious official accounts, it also may be related to this.

2. WeChat as a social CRM tool.
Ceng Ming said that WeChat is suitable for managing users, communicating with users and providing customized services to users. He said it is like a social CRM tool.

As an example, he introduced the case study of China Southern Airlines.

As I explained before, China Southern Airline has leveraged WeChat to reply automatically the flight information, the weather in the each place and so forth to their users. Additionally, users can reserve their seat via WeChat now.

Actually, the leading actor is the user of WOAAP, so it's free to use WeChat as a marketing tool. But Tencent recognizes that WOAAP is not a marketing platform, so it may be difficult to expect the marketing feature addition in future.

But api of WOAAP is published on their site, so it may be able to expect that third party vendor develop the tool for becoming convenient for marketing on WeChat.

The gallery of TV commercials that Tencent provides for overseas. Their overseas users already exceeded 50 million people.

As I explained before, WeChat formally entered into the Indian market, but they will also establish the subsidiary in Malaysia to enter this market soon.

According to them, WeChat already has one million users in Malaysia, but they already started to provide the TV commercial of the Malaysian version for expanding their users there as follows.

The other version is here.

They mainly are promoting the "Hold-to-Talk" feature as same as the Indian version, but the whole style of this commercial have the clear difference with Indian version.

Now WeChat is provided to the various countries, but let's check the TV commercials that are provided in each country.

- Thailand

- Indonesia

- Philippine

Other version -1 ; Other version -2

- Hong Kong

- Taiwan

- Overseas (It seems that this TV commercial is not for the specific country.)

It's very interesting that there are many various versions by each country, isn't it?

Now WeChat has over 50 million overseas users, but their rival "LINE" has about 105 million overseas users. And LINE already entered into the Chinese market, so we have to keep watching their battle in China and overseas as before.

The popularization map of WeChat : India, Thailand and Malaysia are the 2nd countries next to China.

Tencent WeChat already started to advance into the oversea market from last autumn, and they already have gotten the constant popularity in some southeast Asian countries.

And today, I would like to introduce the popularization map of WeChat that was reported by Value2020.

Actually, this map is not based on the number of their users, it is based on the condition that include apps ranking and the diffusion rate of smartphone in each countries. But I think that this map is suitable to understand the current situation of WeChat spreading.

WeChat already be welcomed some Asian countries in addition to China. And according to this map, WeChat is especially welcomed in India, Thailand and Malaysia. About the place except Asia, WeChat is welcomed in Mexico, Argentina, England, Spain, South Africa and so forth.

WeChat now already supported the 15 languages in total. (Simplified Chinese, English, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and so forth.)

WeChat precede to Sina Weibo in the internationalization area at this moment, but the rival of them LINE and KakaoTalk also already started to be welcomed in some of southeast asia.
For the future developments, it's not only needed the language localization, but also is needed the localization of culture, habit, design and so forth.

I would like to keep watching their activity as ever.

Let's start marketing on WeChat(Weixin)! Guidance of managing official account on WeChat.

As I explained before, WeChat is now rapidly increasing their users in China. And many companies already started marketing activity on WeChat, such as Starbucks.

And it's no doubt that other companies who are in the English-speaking countries also would like to start marketing on them, so I would like to introduce how to manage official account on them.

First, when you would like to manage the official account on WeChat, you have to use the "Public Platform of WeChat(PPoW)".

After accessing the top page of PPoW, you have to click the button of "注册(= Register)". After clicking the button of "注册", a dialog will be appeared as follows.

If you already have a QQ account, please enter the its ID number and password on it. If you still don't have any QQ account, then please click the button of right side "注册信QQ(= Register the new account of QQ)".

*Notice: You cannot use the QQ account that already coupled with the private WeChat ID.

After you enter the ID and password of QQ, the registration page of new WeChat will be appeared as follows.

You have to enter the WeChat ID, introduction of this account, nation, languages and the type of this official account. If you enter the all of item, please click the button of "确定(= OK!)".

*Notice: Actually you can select "English" at the section of languages. but as a result, it seems that PPoW still only support for the Mandarin.

If there are no problem, you can see the top page of PPoW as follows.

This PPoW is consist of five menus as follows.

1. 实时消息 = Real-time Information

You can receive the message from followers of this account, and send the reply to them on this page.

2. 用户管理 = User management

You can manage users(followers) of this account on this page, and you can also categorize them by each type(favorite, black list, self-customized and etc.).

3. 群发消息 = Posting to the group

You can set the message that you would like to send to the followers at this page. There are the five type of message as follows.
a. 文字 = Text  b. 语音 = Voice  c. 图片 = Picture(s)  d. 视频 = Video(s)
e. 图文消息 = Text + Picture(s)

And you can specify the message type from these.

*Notice: If you are not a verified user, you can only one message in a day.

4. 素材管理 = Contents management

You can upload the contents that you would like to send with the messages on this page. And you can send the preview of messages to the specific users.

*Notice: It is necessary that the specific user is a your follower.

5. 设置 = Settings

You can change the information and nation of this official account on this page. Furthermore you can download the QR code of this official account here, and you can put its QR code on your Web site or other social media for increasing followers.

And you can apply to become a verified account, but it's necessary that this official account has more than 500 followers for this applying.

If you input the correct ID and password on mobile apps, it will return the error code of "(4, -69 Login failed)". It seems to be a specification of WeChat at this time.
Actually, you can register to this PPoW as a private person. But if you enjoy WeChat as a mobile collaboration tool, you should not register the account via PPoW.

Ok, today that's all.
I would like to write about the advanced method or case study of WeChat marketing in near future.

The end of this article, please forgive me to introduce our official account of WeChat.

Actually, our official account usually introduces our products or services in English, but we also introduce the trend of social media or mobile market in China.
According to the explanation of this PPoW, verified account have more variety method of sending messages. In order to know these merits, and I will write the blog about this, we have to become a verification account. I appreciate your cooperation :)

P.S. Now Tencent provide an international version of PPoW. Because this version provides the English menu, let's try this if you want!

Active accounts of Instant Messenger increased to 1,206,000,000 accounts in China.

According to the report by Eguan, active accounts of Instant Messenger(IM) increased to 1,206,000,000 accounts in China at the third quarter.

Its number increased 17.2% compared to the previous year, and increased 4.1% compared to the previous quarter.

In China, a user usually have multiple accounts of IM, and use the right account in the right case. And when they would like to contact other person, they prefer use it than using Email(Source : Report by CNNIC).

And there are lot of IM service in China now, for example WeChat(Tencent), Meyou(Sina), Wangxin(Taobao), MSN(Microsoft China), Feixin(China Mobile), and also QQ.

Now Tencent have the most strength in this market, but the other companies still have the chance of expanding their user. And foreign companies such as LINE, KAKAO Talk and Skype also be supposed to watch vigilantly for a chance to enter Chinese IM market in future.

So we have to keep attention as ever.

Eguan: Social Media Apps for Android Download Ranking in China.

Eguan published a data of "Social Media Apps for Android Download Ranking" as follows:

WeChat already exceeded 100 million times download. As I explained before, WeChat user exceed 200 million people in the end of September, so I think this is relevant number.

In this data, the second position is Sina Weibo. Sina Weibo totally has 368 million users, and 69% users of among them access it by mobile phone, so this is also relevant number.

The service of third and fourth position is also provided by Tencent. As you know, Tencent have the strength in Chinese social media market.

Unexpectedly, Facebook, Twitter and Google+ was also ranked in this data. As you know, Chinese government has blocked these service, so it can be said that many user  is accessing these service via VPN service :)

Recently Tencent has a bigger market capitalization than Facebook Inc, but I'm interested that which company have bigger chance in the future.

It was increasing 5.2% compared to the previous period, but increasing 52.2% compared to the same period in the previous year.

I reported before that Chinese mobile user was 388.25 million people, so it can be said that the usage of third-party mobile browser is about 60%, though of course there is a error.

How many people are online on QQ now?

QQ is a instant messaging service that are provided by Tencent. According to a news, QQ have over 600 million registered users now.

Recently, Tencent provide a interesting tools that can tell us how many people are online on QQ now.

According to this web site, there are over 161 million users on QQ now (CST 20:53:51, 26th Jun), and the largest number ever is 167 million users.
